History of Dalmatia : The Dalmatian Coast has been populated for thousands of years before Christ. The Illyrians and the Greeks settled in this region, but the first great civilization here was the Romans, who were in the area from the 2nd century b.c. They left behind several monuments which are classics in the Dalmatia of today, like the Diocletian Palace in Split, a symbol of the city. Through the Roman period of Dalmatia, an important splendor came to the region. Then the Barbarians came, and later the Byzantines, and in the 7th century approximately, it was the Slavs that came to settle in the region, mostly on the peninsula, as it was an area of populated islands whose Latin nucleus ran from the invaders.
the Francs and the Byzantines had numerous disputes in the middle ages for these lands that passed to become a part of Venice and of its kingdom. Later came Napoleon, Austria, and finally Italy, all of them trying to dominate the Dalmatian Coast and the Region of Istria. After WWII, Dalmatia became part of Yugoslavia, the Yugoslavia of Tito.
At the end of the 20th century, after the Civil War of Yugoslavia, the unification of WWII disintegrated, leaving Dalmatia to be part of Croatia, untiltoday, the region has recuperated itself from the ravages of war, and has been converted into a tourist area, thanks to the proliferation of hotels, apartments, and infrastructures around its treasures, the sea, the beach, fair climate, and fantastic gastronomy. |
